Ok ladies, it’s time for some real talk.
Put down that latte, green smoothie or even the slightly larger than average glass of wine you’re balancing on an even larger pile of paperwork (no judgement here).
Close down the emails and the hundred and something tabs in your internet browser, and listen up…..
Hell, chuck on a pair of reading glasses if you need to because what we’re discussing today is legit stuff.
I want to talk to you about Groundhog day…..
No, not the 90’s film featuring a young and handsome Bill Murray, and Andie MacDowell’s lust-worthy crimped hair.
What I’m on about is a whole other nightmare.
Entrepreneurial Groundhog Day!
For some, you and entrepreneurial groundhog day are already well and truly acquainted; hence that large glass of wine. Others might be a little confused.
But trust me, read on and you’ll soon know exactly the kind of monster we’re dealing with here.
You’ve definitely met before; you just never knew there was a name for it.
So, what is entrepreneurial groundhog day?
It’s got a lot to do with de ja vu……
Normally we associate de ja vu with that warm, comforting feeling you get when you see an old friend, stumble across a familiar place or even a smell from your childhood.
That’s not what this is.
Take that feeling of familiarity, add a dash of anxiety, a cup of boredom and ample amounts of stress and you’ve got yourself an entrepreneurial groundhog day treat you wouldn’t wish upon your worst enemy.
But rather than bore you further with the details, sharing my experience with this soul crushing, small business strangling snake is probably the best way I can explain it…
I first met entrepreneurial groundhog day back in May, 2008…..
In hindsight, we’d actually encountered one another many times before that, but I just didn’t realise it at the time.
It was a Tuesday….The day started off no different to any other; me, lying wide awake at six in the morning with a thousand and one things on my mind after little over five hours sleep.
This was pretty standard….
And pretty wrong, but back then I didn’t know it could be any different.
Just like the day before, I’d turned on my computer and mindlessly started replying to emails…..
But the further I got, the less I got done.
I was drowning in an ocean of unpaid invoices and unanswered emails.
And let’s not forget the endless and ever growing to-do lists.
Or should I say to-don’t lists, considering none of the tasks on them were ever actually completed…..
My business was literally sucking the life out of me.
Something that was meant to bring me success and joy, and give my life the meaning and flexibility I’d always wanted was doing the opposite…..
I’d turned into a keyboard monkey, a slave to my computer and constantly investing my physical and emotional energy into mundane daily tasks that got me nowhere.
Well, if we’re being honest here, I guess it did get me somewhere eventually.
It got me to where I am today.
Seven years ago, I realised I didn’t have to pretend that entrepreneurial groundhog day was my idea of running a business.
Unlike your mother-in-law or best friend’s new man, I could tell it exactly how I felt about it…
That it’s a load of crap!
Since I kicked entrepreneurial groundhog day to the curb, I popped a bottle of champers and never looked back.
And that business, the one that was draining the living daylights out of me?
I sold it for six figures.
I’m now running a successful lifestyle business, meaning that my work enables me to live an amazing, happy and fulfilling life.
Rather than earning enough to buy a small island or a yacht, which I would of course Instagram #nofilter, my focus is on living where I want to live, resting when my body tells me it needs a break, spending time with friends and family, and honestly, just having the power to choose when it comes to my life and business.
So if you’re finding yourself reaching for that glass of wine again because you’ve realised that you are in fact stuck in your own entrepreneurial groundhog day, please know this.
As cliché as it sounds, it really doesn’t have to be this way.
Long days and no sleep don’t make a successful business!
I’ll tell you what does; hard work.
But not the way you think of it…..
There’s a better and smarter way to make your business work harder for you, not the other way around.
Take me, I’m a living example that it can be done.
Since the dawn of time, entrepreneurial groundhog day has been turning smart people into overwhelmed, unsatisfied stress heads.
But that ends right now.
If you think you may need to escape your entrepreneurial groundhog day, I’d like to invite you to put both your business and your lifestyle first, and join me at my next Doing Day in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide.
