One of the biggest things I wish I knew before starting my business is…
Everything is workoutable.
Is it a real word?
Is it a real concept?
When we’re trying something new for the first time in business, more often than not the actual ‘doing’ isn’t what stops us in our tracks.
It’s our own mindset.
I’m sure I’m not the only woman who can relate to this— and I say ‘woman’ because it seems women struggle with this more than men.
I’m not being sexist. It’s merely an observation.
In business, when do you hear a man say “I’ll try to get that done” or “I’m trying to figure it out”?
Not often, right?
That’s because 9 times out of 10, men don’t try to do something.
They just do it.
They “will get it done” or “are figuring it out”.
In my experience working with female entrepreneurs, women tend to throw in a disclaimer to justify why they can’t achieve something.
“I’ll try to get that done… but I don’t know if I’m intelligent enough.”
“I’m trying to figure it out… but I don’t know if I can really do this.”
And I was the same…
For me, the biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome in starting my business was feeling like I wasn’t smart enough, clever enough, or intelligent enough to get stuff done.
I’m the first to admit, I’m not super techy.
Before I started building online businesses, I had never designed a website, never learnt how to write code…
I’d never even used a DSLR camera.
One particularly memorable moment stands out when I think about overcoming my own self-doubt…
Memorable, and extremely painful at the time.
My first attempt at video marketing was horrific.
Think about how frustrating it is trying to teach your mum/dad/grandpa/boss how to use an iPhone or Facebook (or being the person trying to learn..)
Times that by 10, add in a tight deadline and a sweaty upper lip, and you’ve got me trying to figure out how to produce a single video.
It took me 7 hours to work out how to use the camera, set the scene and frame the shot, use the teleprompter, sort out the audio and get enough footage to scrape together something that kind of resembled a homepage video.
And throughout those 7 hours, I was constantly fighting the urge to throw it in and concede that this was something I just simply could not do.
It’s like you’re banging your head against a brick wall…
The wall that you’re just too stupid or not intelligent enough to break through.
And more than anything, there’s the overwhelming feelings of embarrassment, shame and of being a total idiot.
But here’s the thing…
Every time I try something new with technology— webinars, membership portals, octopus-like Infusionsoft campaigns— I’m always out of my depth.
I’m constantly coming across new things within my business and in the digital marketing space that I’m not yet an expert in.
And that’s ok because, wait for it…
No one actually expects you to be.
But it’s recognising this, and not letting it defeat you that separates those who are successful, and those who give in.
Even when you feel like the dumbest person on the planet, screaming at the computer and having a tantrum even your toddler would be embarrassed by…
Don’t give up.
Everything is workoutable.
It might feel a bit silly at first, but repeat it over in your mind like a ‘doing’ mantra.
Everything is workoutable. Everything is workoutable.
Sure, it’s going to take time, patience and multiple cups of tea.
But as some wise guy once said, nothing worth doing is easy.
And lots of people give in and take the easy way.
But we’re building our profitable lifestyle businesses the hard way because it’s what our competitors aren’t willing to do.
If building a 7-figure business was easy, we’d all be millionaires.
But we’re not.
So when you’re ready to throw your computer out the window and retire to a life of 9-5 monotony, remember why we’re doing this.
Remind yourself of all the reasons the hard way is worth it.
Step away from the computer, take a breath and make yourself a cup of tea.
Heck, make yourself a cup of something stronger if the situation calls for it.
Then get back into it, and don’t move until you’ve got it worked out.
You’re a strong, clever, intelligent woman who is capable of getting stuff done.
If in doubt, Google it!
